JA 8 B Civics: Feb. 13-17

This week we will continue our study of the U.S. Constitution. We will discuss its importance and how it affects our lives every single day, even if we may not realize it. We will begin our investigation of the three branches of our government, and what they do. We will view some videos in class that explain the branches, and the concept of checks and balances.

This week we will continue investigating our Crime in America unit by looking at the causes of crime in the United States. We will also discuss the different types of crime, and the relationship of drugs, alcohol, guns, and gangs as well. We will spend some time researching why violence is so prevalent in certain areas of the country and discuss what can be done to stop it.

This week we will begin our investigation of the U.S. Constitution & why it replaced the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution is the foundation on which American government & society are based, and it effects our lives everyday. We will investigate the many debates between the men that were part of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. We will discuss the leadership of George Washington, the different compromises that were made, as well as the different camps of people with differing opinions on what the new government should look like. As the week progresses, we will break down each part of the document & examine the structure of our government within the three branches.

This week we will begin our investigation of the American government under the Articles of Confederation after the revolutionary war. We will discuss the problems that existed in the Articles & the reasons why they needed to be changed. As we look at the debates between the framers, we will investigate the reasons why the Articles constrained the national government's power; which basically made it inoperable. As the week progresses, we will discuss the arguments between the Federalists & the Anti-Federalists.

This week we will continue our discussion of the American court system and also take a look at the role that lawyers play in the legal system. We will examine when you would need a lawyer and how to find one. We will also begin to discuss criminal law and juvenile justice this week. We will investigate crime in America, by looking at the problems of gangs, drugs, and other issues. We will also talk about how to report and prevent crimes as well.

US History: Feb. 6-10

This week we will finish up our investigation of the American Revolution and shift our focus to the first years of our new nation. We will discuss the Articles of Confederation, which was our first Constitution & a failure. We will discuss the reasons why the Articles created, as well as the reasons they did not work to maintain cooperation of the new United States.

The Declaration is one of the most important documents in history; and we will examine why.

This week students will take part in a Congressional Simulation in order to see just how difficult it is to get bills passed into laws in our country. This simulation project will be based on participation, as well as a summary activity when we finish. Later in the week we will look at the role that lawyers play in the legal system. This week we will continue our discussion of English dominance in the American colonies & we will begin to see limits on the freedoms of those who lived there. We will examine the causes & effects of the legislation, as well as the actions by some of the colonists that created the "need" for independence from England. It must be made known that not all colonists wanted independence; many were known as "loyalists." We will examine the arguements of both sides this week as we look at some of the limits on freedom; such as the Proclamation of 1763, the Sugar Act, and the Stamp Act.

This week we will continue our research into the European empires of the Americas. We will place our emphasis on the British colonies and the eventual seeds of unrest in the colonies. Why did people in the colonies desire self-rule? What actions did the British take that were upsetting to the colonists? We will discuss these issues and more during the week. Later in the week we will begin our investigation of the struggle for independence and the American Revolution

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. During this first week in all classes we will review class policies & expectations. Students will take Pre-Tests in all classes and their book assignments will be given out. Mygradebook log-in information will be given out as well. As for specific class information, see below!

U.S. History:- This week we will begin examining the European empires of the Americas & we will see how the British began to dominate the New World as the Spanish began to falter. We will discuss how the English colonies developed on the Atlantic coast of the United States & the major impact this would have on the creation of the United States & the influence of British culture in America.

Street Law:- We will also discuss the importance of laws and the need for law in society. We will examine why we NEED to understand the practical laws that are to be researched and discussed this semester as well as the concept of Justice. As we move into the material, students will examine the goals of the legal system, rights and responsibilities, lawmaking, and the court system in America.

JA 8 Civics:- We will begin by discussing the importance of good citizenship, why we have laws, & where our laws come from. We will discuss the diversity of America & the roots of our Democratic government. We will discuss the influence that English law would have on our democratic republic.

We have finally made it to the last week of the semester! It has been a wonderful experience for me, and I hope it has also been great for all of my students. This week all classes will take the required Post-Tests after a day of review and study time. Remember, these tests count as a final exam! Monday is also the last chance to take an AR Test for the semester!

During the remainder of the week in all classes we will discuss current global events such as the global economic problems, environmental issues, revolutions in the Middle East, the 2012 U.S. Presidential election, and the Occupy Movement. I believe that these events are going to affect all peoples of the world in the years to come.

This week we will continue our introduction to the American Economic System with a discussion of how capitalism works in the United States. We will discuss the concepts of free enterprise & the free market & how our economic freedoms are linked to our personal freedoms that are outlined in the Constitution. We will also discuss the effects of globalization, as well as America's role in the global economy.

World History: Dec. 19-23

This week we will continue our investigation of WWII. As Hitler's armies began to take control of most of Europe, the Japanese would unleash a sneak attack against the United States at Pearl Harbor. As the United States entered the war, the tides would begin to turn in favor of the Allies, also due in part to Hitler's failed invasion of the Soviet Union; Operation Barbarossa. Towards the end of the week we will investigate & discuss how the Allies began to strike back against the Axis on all fronts, including the most famous invasion of all; Operation Overlord. D-Day would mark the beginning of the end for Axis controlled Europe. Finally, we will discuss the first use of an atomic bomb, and how it would end the war, and lay the groundwork for a new conflict; the Cold War.

This week we will conclude our investigation of citizenship and the internet. Then students will be introduced to some of the fundamental concepts in Economics. First, we will discuss why economics are such a huge part of our daily lives, and how government and economics are tied together. We will investigate the different types of economic systems, along with how we make economic decisions every day! We will discuss wants vs. needs & the concept of scarcity as well.

We will begin this week by examining the end of WWI and the problems created by the Treaty of Versailles, focusing on the impact it would have on Germany. We will examine the post-WWI uncertainty, as well as a worldwide depression that would have major ramifications across the globe. We will then shift our focus towards the rise of dictators after WWI, with an investigation of how Mussolini, Stalin, & Hitler obtained absolute power in their nations. Towards the end of the week we will closely examine the rise of Hitler & the creation of Nazi Germany. We will look at how the Nazis would take over all aspects of German life. We will also discuss how Hitler's defiance of the Versailles treaty would create the conditions for the bloodiest conflict in human history; the Second World War!

This week we will investigate the many changes of the 19th century after the fall of Napoleon. We will investigate the effects that these vast changes would have on the early part of the 20th century and the eventual break-out of the First World War. We will focus on the Industrial Revolution and the growth of progressive thought in Europe. We will examine the effects of Nationalism and Imperialism (Check out the British Imperialism Political Cartoon at left) as well. These factors played an important role in the growth of nation-states and the factors that led to WWI. Towards the end of the week we shall discuss and investigate the long-term and the immediate causes that led to World War I.

We will discuss how Napoleon was able to assume absolute power and forge an empire across Europe.

This week students will present their Supreme Court Research Projects to the class. We will begin the presentations on Monday, hopefully finishing on Tuesday. ALL RESEARCH PAPERS ARE DUE MONDAY! After the presentations, we will spend the rest of the week watching a documentary and the film Gideon's Trumpet, based on the real story of Clarence E. Gideon. This simple, poor man took a case all the way to the Supreme Court and changed the meaning of the Constitution for all Americans.

This week we will conclude the Reformation era & begin our investigation of the Age of Exploration. We will focus our efforts on the effects it had for peoples in the Old & New Worlds. We will look closely at Columbus, Pizarro, & Cortes. We will discuss the issues of the Columbian Exchange, including the transfer of culture, religion, & disease. We will investigate the interactions between conquerors & the conquered. Towards the end of the week we will shift our focus back to the Old World by discussing the Age of Absolute Rulers in Europe, along with the lasting impact some of these rulers would have for future generations.

We will discuss the causes & effects of each this week! The Renaissance was a rebirth for culture & learning after the Dark Ages in Europe. The Reformation began with challenges to the superiority of the Catholic Church, which held massive amounts of power in the medieval world. Emphasis will be on the roles of Martin Luter (Left) & King Henry VIII of England (Right), as these two men would play a vital role in the transformation of religion during the Reformation.

This week we will begin our investigation of the European Middle Ages. The beginning of the Middle Ages is known as the "Dark Ages," due to a sharp cultural decline after the fall of the Roman Empire. We will discuss the growing power of the Catholic Church during this time period as well as the role of Charlemagne (below). Charlemagne was able to unite several small germanic kingdoms into a vast empire, known as the "Holy Roman Empire" that would lead to the development of Western Europe. We will also discuss medieval society & how the system of feudalism impacted people. Towards the end of the week we will focus on the Black Death- The Plague- which wiped out over 30% of the population of Europe. We will also investigate the causes & effects of the Hundred Years' War- which would set the stage for conflict between England & France for years to come.

This week we will continue our investigation of the Legislative Branch with an in-class Congressional Simulation in the beginning of the week. Students will be divided up into either House or Senate committees with the responsibility of writing up bills, debating them, and attempting to pass them into law. This simulation is a project grade based on participation, so all students must make a point of being involved in the process. Towards the end of the week we will shift our focus to the Executive Branch of our national government.

This week we will investigate the rise of Islam & its expansion through the Middle East. As Christianity began to dominate most of Europe, Islam spread to the Middle East. We will discuss the effects that Islam had on culture & politics as well. We will also discuss the Byzantine Empire, which was the Eastern portion of the Roman Empire that lasted long after the Western Roman Empire fell. We will discuss the contributions of the Eastern Empire, as well as the mixture of Eastern culture that made it unique & different from the Western Empire.

This week we will begin looking at the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. These amendments give Americans some of their most basic freedoms and we will spend some time looking at each one in detail. We will discuss each of them and how they affect our lives on a daily basis. We will also investigate how the Bill of Rights did not originally apply to everyone; including women, African American, and Native Americans. This week we will continue our investigation of the empires of the East, in India and China. We will examine the development of them and the influence they had on the culture, religion, and government of their peoples. We will focus on how trade played such a vital part in the transmission of religion and culture. Towards the end of the week will also examine the civilizations of Africa, especially the Aksum Empire, before shifting our focus to the Middle East and the beginnings of the religion of Islam and its impact on the Middle East & the globe.

This week we will begin our study of American Federalism. We will investigate how our national government works with the state governments spread across the country. We will study the types of powers and laws that are granted to the federal and state governments, as well as those powers that are shared.. We will discuss the evolving relationship between the state and national governments, and the conflicts that can arise. We will discuss the issues of the tenth amendment, which focuses on state rights. We will also look at some landmark Supreme Court cases like McCulloch v. Maryland, that have set the precedent that actions of individual states may not impede valid constitutional exercises of power by the Federal government.

We will discuss the concepts of checks & balances, as well as the separation of powers between the different branches of government. Students will take the Ch. 3 Test late this week as well. After testing, we will begin our discussion of the Bill of Rights, which are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. The Bill of Rights are the basic individual freedoms that most of us take for granted, & they were not part of the original Constitution. The anti-federalists argued to get these amendments put into the Constitution. Emphasis for this week will be on the 1st amendment!

This week we will continue our investigation of Ancient Rome. We will emphasize on the transition from republic to empire & our focus will be on the leadership of Julius Caesar. We will discuss how Caesar gained popularity & power in Rome through his military conquests. As the week progresses we will look at the formation of the Roman Empire & the role of Augustus (Octavian) after Caesar's murder, at the hands of members of the Roman senate on the Ides (15th) of March! We will also discuss the lasting impact the Romans left for future generations. We will also examine the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire & investigate the impact that Christianity had in the empire. Towards the end of the week we will examine how the Roman empire began to decay, & eventually fall at the hands of European tribes.

We have finally made it to the last week of school! This has been a wonderful year of growth and achievement on a number of levels. This week we will discuss how far we have come, & where we are headed. I plan on discussing current events in relation to our classes to wrap up the school year. Just because it is the last week, do not think we will not have something to do. If you have not done so already, you will need to turn your textbooks in to me ASAP! Another reminder of note, Thursday all students are expected to be at the London Bridge Resort for our Awards Assembly at 7:30 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to support your fellow classmates! Finally, our graduation ceremony will be at 7:00 PM, also at the London Bridge Resort. Come out & celebrate graduation day! I wish all of my students & their families a safe & relaxing summer!

This week we will begin our investigation of conflicts in the Middle East after WWII. After WWII, the Allied leaders felt that the remaining Jews deserved a homeland after the horrors of the Holocaust. The state of Israel was created, & conflict then ensued. During the Cold War, the Middle East was also a place of extreme changes & both the U.S. & Soviet Union wanted to make the region part of its "sphere of influence." We will discuss the causes & consequences of interventions in the region since WWII for the remainder of the school year.

We will discuss how the tides of war turned in favor of the Allies in the European theatre after D-Day, & in the Pacific through the island hopping campaigns. Finally, we will discuss the use of the atomic bomb, including the brutal effects it would have for the future of international relations. We will then begin to discuss the post-war world, in which the U.S. & Soviet Union would begin an era of tension & competition known as the Cold War that would last for nearly 50 years!

After the world was left ravaged by WWII, two nations would emerge as superpowers that would fight for global dominance; the United States & the Soviet Union. The ideologies would face off, Democracy vs. Communism. We will investigate the West's distrust of the Soviets towards the end of WWII as well as the fear that Soviet communism would spread throughout Europe. This week we will examine the causes & consequences of the Korean War as well.

We will begin this week by examining the problems created by the Treaty of Versailles, focusing on the impact it would have on Germany. We will examine the post-WWI uncertainty, as well as a worldwide depression that would have major ramifications across the globe. We will then shift our focus towards the rise of dictators after WWI, with an investigation of how Mussolini, Stalin, & Hitler obtained absolute power in their nations. Towards the end of the week we will closely examine the rise of Hitler & the creation of Nazi Germany. We will look at how the Nazis would take over all aspects of German life. We will also discuss how Hitler's defiance of the Versailles treaty would create the conditions for the bloodiest conflict in human history; the Second World War!

This week we will investigate the discovery of the Nazi concentration camps as the Allied troops marched their way into Nazi Germany & would eventually force them to surrender. Then we will also investigate the Allied victory in the Pacific. After the fall of the Nazis, the Allies were still battling the Japanese in brutal combat. We will discuss the use of firebombing in major Japanese cities like Tokyo, as well as the creation of a secret weapon that would change the world forever after it was used to essentially end the war; the atomic bomb!

This week we will continue our investigation of WWII after the success of Operation Overlord. We will discuss the liberation of France, as this was a significant event in the war. After pushing the Nazis out of France, the Allied knew the next step would be to invade Germany. We will examine how the American and British troops faced off against the Nazis from the west, as we will discuss the Battle of the Bulge- Hitler's last gamble offensive against the Allies. Then we will investigate the Soviet invasion from the east and the take-over of Berlin. As the Allies surrounded Germany, Hitler would commit suicide, leaving the Third Reich without a leader. We will discuss the Nazi surrender, as well as what Allied troops would find on their way to Germany- the concentration camps that would reveal the horrors of Hitler's "Final Solution."

This week we will investigate the many changes in the 19th century after the fall of Napoleon. We will discuss the effects of the industrial revolution, and how this would lead to an increase in imperialism, as well as a growth in nationalism among nations. We will also examine the emergence and growth of socialist thought and the influence of Karl Marx. We will also look at the growth of nation-states in Europe. Towards the end of the week we will discuss how all of these changes in the 19th century would cause problems in the early part of the 20th century, and eventually lead to the First World War!

This week we will continue our investigation of the French Revolution and the Age of Napoleon. As the revolution raged on, Napoleon emerged through swift military victories and his popularity increased significantly. While the people of France were dealing with "The Terror," Napoleon actually offered stability to a nation in turmoil. We will discuss how Napoleon was able to assume absolute power and forge an empire across Europe. Towards the end of the week we will discuss how it began to collapse.

This week we will continue our investigation of WWII. We will begin by discussing the Tehran Conference of 1943. . This was the first face-to-face meeting between the "Big 3"- Churchill, Stalin, & Roosevelt. These 3 leaders would discuss plans on how to attack the Axis, as well how to deal with other issues of the war. This week we will have a reading & questions on the conference, & we will be watching a video on Stalin's influence during this time period. Towards the end of the week we will investigate a plan that came to light at the Tehran Conference; the plan to liberate France-as well as the rest of Europe from Nazi domination. Most of you know this event as Operation Overlord; or D-Day.

Then we will move on to the problems brewing in France that would lead to a revolution. We will discuss the many causes of the French Revolution, as well as the strange events that would follow. Towards the end of the week we will discuss the effects of the French Revolution, not just in France, but across the globe, as it led to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.

This week we will continue our investigation of the Executive Branch of government. We will discuss the duties & powers of the president & vice president, as well as what other members of the Executive Branch do on a daily basis to help make government run smoothly. We will also cover checks & balances & the role they play for the president. We will also discuss why the Constitution does not grant as many specific powers to the president as it does to the Congress. Why did the framers do this? We will examine how presidential power has grown over the course of our nation's history from Washington to Obama.

This week we will focus our efforts on the turning tides of the European theatre of WWII. As the Americans were battling against the Japanese in the Pacific, and the Soviets were trying to hold back the Nazis, the Allied Powers were planning to take back Europe from the Axis. Would it be Italy or France first? We will discuss the debate between the "Big 3"-Churchill, Roosevelt, & Stalin over what to do next. We will investigate the motives behind their opinions, as well as what actually happened. Italy would be first! We will discuss the Allied invasion of Italy, the removal of Mussolini, the attempt to put Mussolini back in power, & finally the fall of Mussolini & the fascists in Italy. Now that the Allies had a foothold on mainland Europe; it would be time to take back the rest of the continent.

This week we will continue our investigation of the Age of Exploration. We will focus our efforts on the effects it had for peoples in the Old & New Worlds. Towards the end of the week we will shift our focus back to the Old World by discussing the Age of Absolute Rulers in Europe, along with the lasting impact some of these rulers would have for future generations.

We will also investigate Hitler's invasion of the USSR - Operation Barbarossa, which would create problems for the Nazis. This week we will discuss the Renaissance & Reformation, which led to many changes throughout Europe & the globe. What led to these 2 major events? We will discuss the causes & effects of each this week! The Renaissance was a rebirth for culture & learning after the Dark Ages in Europe. The Reformation began with challenges to the superiority of the Catholic Church, which held massive amounts of power in the medieval world. Emphasis will be placed on Martin Luther (LEFT) & King Henry VIII of England (RIGHT). These two men would be responsible for the creation of new sects of the Christian religion that would compete with Catholicism.

Welcome back! This week we will continue our investigation of the outbreak of WWII. We will discuss Hitler's invasion of Poland & the use of the Blitzkrieg to swiftly knock out his adversaries. We will also investigate Hitler's non-aggression pact with Stalin & the the consequences this would have early in the war. After Poland, Hitler's next target was France. We will discuss the fall of France to the Nazis & how it led to Axis domination of the European continent for most of the war. After France, Hitler needed to take out Great Britain. Towards the end of the week we will discuss the Battle of Britain along with the constant Nazi bombardment of major British cities, specifically the bombing of London, which led to civilians trying to escape or hiding out in subways as in the picture to the right!

Welcome back! This week we will bcontinue our investigation of the Dark Ages, the period of cultural decline in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. We will discuss the growing power of the Catholic Church during this time period as well as the role of Charlemagne. Charlemagne was able to unite several small germanic kingdoms into a vast empire, known as the "Holy Roman Empire" that would lead to the development of Western Europe. We will also discuss medieval society & how the system of feudalism impacted people. Towards the end of the week we will focus on the Black Death- The Plague- which wiped out over 30% of the population of Europe. We will also investigate the causes & effects of the Hundred Years' War- which would set the stage for conflict between England & France for years to come.

We will discuss how citizens truly can make a difference in their communities through volunteerism & other activities.
